Riddle-Me-Rye is an artisan microbakery business, specialising in sourdough bread, heritage grains, ancient grains and sprouted grains. In July 2019 we stopped using animal products completely and are now a 100% vegan, plant-based business.

**Update as of May 2022 – Riddle-Me-Rye has ceased trading as a commercial business but may return in some other form in the future**

Riddle-Me-Rye is a multi award-winning bakery – 16 of our sourdough breads have won awards at national competitions to date.

At the 2019 World Bread Awards we picked up gold, silver and bronze awards for three of our entries and were runners up in the ‘Authentic Sourdough with Added Ingredients’ category. At the 2018 World Bread Awards, we won the Fruit Bread category and took home one gold award and one silver award.

We scooped 6 medals at the 2019 Scottish Bread Championships – one gold award, four silver awards and one bronze.  In the 2018 Scottish Bread Championships we were overall Reserve Champions taking home one gold award, three silver awards and one bronze award.

About

In years gone by the phrase ‘Riddle-Me-Ree’ was an invitation in old English to guess the answer to a riddle or puzzle.

The name Riddle-Me-Rye plays on this phrase and harks back to historic times when the pace of life was slower and less frenetic than it is today.

Modern bread manufacturing techniques focus on mass production and speed to market, pumping bread full of additives & yeast such that the longest part of the whole process is actually the 2 hour cooling period when the loaves come out of the oven before they are wrapped for the supermarket shelves.

At Riddle-Me-Rye we revert back to the traditional techniques of bread making, focusing on long fermentation sourdough to unlock the nutrients from the grains and improve the digestibility of the gluten. We use the best organic stoneground wheats and highly nutritious heritage grains as the basis for our daily bread. And of course our favourite grain of them all – rye!
